Background: With globalization being at a rapid pace, multinational enterprises encounter a major dilemma between brand standardization and localization within international markets based on cultural differences. This dilemma can be considered as one of the most important factors for multinational corporations in terms of strategic planning. Problem Statement: Although numerous researchers have focused on the topic of brand standardization and localization, there is a lack of understanding of the different impacts that localization versus standardization could have on firm's success in foreign markets as well as situations when hybrid
approach may work better. Cultural sensitivity of the strategy, as well as customer trust in international brands, has not been properly studied yet. Methodology: This paper uses a combination of quantitative methods using survey data (n = 112) collected from international marketing managers in FMCG, technology, and retail industries in India and qualitative data obtained through 18 interviews. Regression analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, and ANOVA tests were performed on the quantitative data. Statistical findings: Brand localization (β= 0.43, p < 0.001), cultural sensitivity (β = 0.31, p = 0.001), and consumer trust (β = 0.38, p < 0.001) significantly predicted market performance. Glocalization, where both standardization and localization elements are involved, yielded the best mean score of performance (M = 4.38). This model explained 64% of the variance in market performance (R² = 0.64). Contributions of Results: As revealed by this research, a balanced approach to glocalization involving standardization and localization proved superior to the pure strategies of standardization and localization. This research has made contributions towards developing a model for brand strategies in heterogeneous markets.
