Abstract

Internationalisation entails a plethora of risk factors that, if ignored, could undermine the competitive edge and profitability of companies. In this study, risk management practices in MNEs during internationalisation and market penetration will be discussed in light of political, economic, cultural, and regulatory risks. Mixed research methodology was used for this study, consisting of quantitative survey involving 312 executives working in 18 different countries ranging from developing to developed, supplemented with 28 qualitative interviews. Multiple linear regression, thematic analysis, and data triangulation were used for analysis. The results show that firms utilising comprehensive risk frameworks that involve geopolitical risk hedging, currency diversification, cultural adaptability, and regulation compliance see statistically significant increases in market entry success rates (p < 0.01), with a difference of 37 % in long-term retention rate in host countries in comparison to firms using reactive risk frameworks. Dynamic capabilities such as risk sensing and reconfiguration serve as mediators between sophisticated risk practices and better market outcomes. Regulation risks have increased dramatically post-2020 and stand out as the most rapidly growing risk category. The insights gained from the study provide a scientifically grounded multi-dimensional approach that can be used by organisations in any sector or geographic location to implement risk intelligence within their international marketing strategies. The study ends with policy and organisational strategy recommendations as well as a research agenda focused on digital risks and platform-based internationalisation.
