The fast-paced digital evolution of the global marketplace has had an immense impact on how multinational companies implement their international marketing strategies. In this paper, the vital interplay between classical and modern approaches to international marketing in terms of the successful incorporation of classical marketing strategies within modern digital frameworks was examined. As part of the analysis of 87 international businesses from different industries and 24 in-depth interviews, this study uncovers five important mechanisms of adaptation of classical models: omnichannel integration, personalization based on data, localization of social media presence, digital customer relationship management, and agility in the implementation of strategies. Using a mixed-method approach, the companies with integrated approaches to adaptation enjoy 34% better penetration and 28% better customer retention as opposed to companies that use purely classical approaches to international marketing. The research shows that effective international marketing is based on adaptation of proven approaches in the digital world rather than complete rejection of classical principles. This paper offers a novel model of adaptation in international marketing based on three levels: strategic alignment, tactical execution, and operational excellence, and digital competencies required for each level. This study has important practical applications for international marketing and contributes significantly to international marketing theory.
