The need for Digital Transformation (DT) is growing in importance to the survival and competitiveness of SMEs in optimizing their internal processes and addressing the ever-changing market conditions. Nevertheless, DT implementation can be impeded by certain obstacles like lack of financing, technology-based problems, and organizational challenges. The present research aims at studying the benefits of digital transformation and the challenges that arise when implementing DT in SMEs in order to make some practical recommendations on how best to implement DT regardless of all the challenges. Quantitative and qualitative research methodologies were applied in the study. Structured questionnaires were employed to gather information from 250 SMEs based in Kerala, India, while semi-structured interviews were administered to the organization managers. Significant results indicate an inverse relationship between financial challenges and adoption (r = -0.62, p < 0.01) and opportunities (r = -0.48, p < 0.01), whereas the relationship between adoption and opportunities is direct (r = 0.68, p < 0.01). From the structural equation modeling analysis, it becomes clear that adoption serves as a mediator of the relationship between challenges and opportunities, where β values = -0.62, 0.68, and -0.48 (all p < 0.01). This research provides a holistic theoretical framework which connects challenges, adoption, and opportunities, adding to the current literature on DT in the context of SMEs where no other model exists thus far.
